Lactobacillus casei is a genus of Gram-positive, non-bacteriophage-like bacteria belonging to the family Lactobacillaceae. Lactobacillus casei is a non-branched Gram-positive bacterium, mostly in the form of straight rods. Lactobacillus casei can be classified as aerobic and anaerobic according to different growth conditions; aerobic Lactobacillus casei requires oxygen to grow, while anaerobic Lactobacillus casei does not require oxygen. Lactobacillus casei can be divided into lactic acid type and non-lactic acid type according to different metabolism; lactic acid type of Lactobacillus casei can produce lactic acid by fermentation, while non-lactic acid type of Lactobacillus casei does not produce lactic acid.
